Cindy Bowles is Controller for Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation. Cindy oversees the accounting department and provides support to the Chief Financial Officer. The accounting department is responsible for the consolidated financial statements of Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation and its subsidiaries, management reports, grants management and reporting, loan management, business planning, and numerous bank and investment accounts. The accounting department also collects and manages impact information for reporting to various funding sources and prepares projections for funding applications. Cindy serves as the primary contact during outside audits and assists with funding applications. Cindy reviews and analyzes financial reports, provides financial analysis, and ensures that the duties assigned to the accounting department are completed efficiently and accurately.
In addition, Cindy serves as the Accounting and Reporting Manager for two venture capital funds licensed by the Small Business Administration and managed by Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation. Southern Appalachian Fund L.P. is a New Markets Venture Capital Company and Meritus Ventures, L.P. is a Rural Business Investment Company. Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation’s accounting department is responsible for all aspects of the financial management of these funds, including required reporting to the Small Business Administration.
Prior to employment at Kentucky Highlands, Cindy was employed as Accounting Manager at T.Q., Inc. in Monticello, Kentucky, and she was Senior General Ledger Clerk at Tesoro Petroleum Corporation in San Antonio, Texas. Cindy attended San Antonio College where she completed courses in accounting and has completed various work related courses in computer software applications and accounting.
Terri Whitson joined Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation in April 1979. Her responsibilities as Accountant include cash management and preparation of monthly financial statements for Kentucky Highlands and its five subsidiaries or related companies. Terri’s cash management responsibilities include daily monitoring and monthly reconciliation of numerous cash and investment accounts. She is responsible for accounts payable, notes payable, and fixed assets activity. Terri is responsible for payroll reports as well as several of Kentucky Highlands reports to funding agencies. Due to requirements of Kentucky Highlands funding sources, Terri maintains multiple bank accounts and monitors them through online banking software, which she also uses for wire/account transfers and ACH transfers. Terri is also responsible for daily wire transfers for working capital lines of credit, one of Kentucky Highlands major investment instruments.
Terri negotiates with investment firms and makes recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer for possible investments of idle funds and deals directly with the bank officers on cash management issues. Terri’s financial statement responsibilities include general ledger accounting functions for multiple funds and all intercompany transactions for the six Kentucky Highlands companies. She is also responsible for the preparation of annual audit schedules.
Terri has completed various accounting college courses and work related training for accounting and computer software applications and is a graduate of Leadership Tri-County.
Brooklyn Hooker is an Accountant for Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation. Brooklyn assists in the preparation of monthly consolidated financial statements for Kentucky Highlands and its five subsidiaries. She is responsible for general ledger accounting functions including analyzing and reconciling numerous funds and grants and preparing monthly management report schedules. Brooklyn’s responsibilities include reconciling all bank accounts for the six companies. She is in charge of compiling and reporting corporate financial information to various funding sources including OFN, CARS, CDFI, etc., and is responsible for preparing audit schedules, as well as processing payroll and payroll reports.
Brooklyn also prepares both financial and narrative reports for various grants including OCS and HUD, and assists in the preparation of the Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation annual business plan.
Ms. Hooker earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of the Cumberlands in 2011. She received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Eastern Kentucky University in 2008, where she received a Presidential academic scholarship.
Mrs. Reed earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Kentucky and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Morehead State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance. Tennille is also a graduate of Leadership Tri-County.
David’s responsibilities also include the daily accounting and financial reporting for two limited partnerships licensed by SBA. Southern Appalachian Fund, LP, is a New Markets Venture Capital (NMVC) company and Meritus Ventures LP is a Rural Business Investment Company (RBIC). Kentucky Highlands is responsible for all aspects of the financial management of these funds, including required reporting to the Small Business Administration.
Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Managerial Finance from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. Prior to employment with Kentucky Highlands, David was employed as a Staff Accountant at Cloyd & Associates, PSC in Corbin, Kentucky and was Assistant Controller at Vinland Energy, LLC in Lexington, Kentucky.
